چکیده

Economic conditions at the time of labour market entry can induce wage diff erentials between workers entering the labour market at diff erent points in time. While the existence and persistence of these entry wage diff erentials are well documented, little is known about their interaction with employees’ mobility behaviour. This paper contributes to this research area by analyzing the interaction between job mobility and entry wage diff erentials using German administrative data. The results suggest that labour market entrants earning less than the average starting wage are more likely to change jobs, directly from employer to employer as well as indirectly via an unemployment spell. In addition they are more likely to change occupation. Moreover, job mobility tends to reduce the eff ects of labour market entry conditions, implying that job mobility operates as an adjustment mechanism that mitigates entry wage diff erentials. These results hold not only for high-skilled, but also for medium-skilled and unskilled workers. JEL Classifi cation: E24, J31, J62, J64

Cohort Wage Effects and Job Mobility

Economic conditions at the time of entering the labour market can induce wage differentials between entry cohorts. While there exists much empirical evidence on the existence and persistence of these cohort effects, little is known about their impact on employees’ mobility behaviour. Using a large data set derived from German administrative data, this paper analyzes the determinants of job mobi...

www.econstor.eu The Importance of Two-Sided Heterogeneity for the Cyclicality of Labour Market Dynamics

Using two data sets derived from German administrative data, including a linked employer-employee data set, we investigate the cyclicality of worker and job flows. The analysis stresses the importance of two-sided labour market heterogeneity in this context, taking into account both observed and unobserved characteristics. We find that small firms hire mainly unemployed workers, and that they d...

Adverse Economic Conditions at Labour Market Entry: Permanent Scars or Rapid Catch-up?∗

This study investigates how shocks in economic conditions at entry into the labour market affect wages of low and medium-skilled workers over a large part of their careers. We use detailed German employment data in which we follow a large sample of workers from entry up to 19 years in the labour market. Long-term effects of initial economic conditions on wages are identified using variation in ...

Do Initial Conditions Persist Between Firms? An Analysis of Firm-Entry Cohort Effects and Job Losers using Matched Employer-Employee Data

Influential studies have suggested that initial conditions can have persistent effects on workers’ careers within firms. It is a longstanding question among economists whether such lasting wage differentials among firms and industries are due to persistent deviations of wages from workers’ skills due to contracting and market frictions, or whether they arise from permanent differences among wor...
